미국에서 활동중인 하드 락/헤비 메틀 그룹을 모두 말씀드리기는 힘들겠지만 대표적인 밴드들 몇 팀을 중심으로 말씀드리죠.
메가데스(Megadeth)는 작년(2004)에 새 앨범을 내고 다시 활동을 시작했습니다.
라이벌 밴드라고 볼 수 있는 메탈리카(Metallica), 앤쓰랙스(Anthrax), 슬레이어(Slayer) 모두 활동중입니다.
건즈 앤 로지스(Guns N' Roses)는 몇년 전부터 보컬 액슬 로즈 중심으로 새로운 멤버를 영입해서 앨범을 내놓는다는 소식이 있었는데요. 계속 연기되고 있는 실정입니다.
액슬 로즈를 뺀 나머지 멤버들은 벨벳 리볼버(Velvet Revolver)라는 밴드를 결성해서 작년부터 큰 인기를 얻고 있습니다.
그밖에 최근에 인기있는 밴드라면 퍼펙트 서클(A Perfect Circle)과 오디오슬레이브(Audioslave)가 있습니다.
퍼펙트 서클은 툴의 보컬리스트 메이나드 키넌을 중심으로 결성된 수퍼 밴드죠.
마를린 맨스 출신의 트위기, 스매싱 펌킨스 출신의 제임스 이하등이 뭉쳐서 큰 인기를 얻고 있습니다.
오디오슬레이브도 사운드가든의 보컬 크리스 코넬과 RATM 멤버들이 뭉친 수퍼 밴드입니다.
벨벳 리볼버, 퍼펙트 서클, 오디오슬레이브는 과거의 유명 뮤지션들이 헤쳐모인 수퍼 밴드라는 공통점이 있죠.
주다스 프리스트(Judas Priest), 슬라우터(Slaughter), 헬로윈(Helloween)등도 모두 활동중입니다.
특히 주다스 프리스트는 오리지널 보컬인 랍 헬포드가 복귀해서 얼마전 새 앨범을 발표했습니다.
그란데 미국 밴드는 아니고 영국 밴드죠.
그리고 헬로윈도 미국 밴드가 아니라 독일 밴드입니다.
물론 주다스 프리스트는 미국에서도 아주 유명하지만 헬로윈은 그다지 알려지지 않은 편입니다.
콘(Korn)은 위에 말한 밴드들에 비해 후배긴 하지만 신인 밴드라고 보기는 힘들죠. 1992년에 결성되었으니 벌써 10년이 넘었거든요.
콘과 비슷한 시기에 등장한 밴드로는 림프 비즈킷(Limp Bizkit), 슬립낫(Slipknot), 스태틱X(Static-X), 파파로치(Papa Roach), 시스템 오브 어 다운(System of a Down), 피어 팩토리(Fear Factory)등이 있습니다.
LA건즈(L.A. Guns)도 얼마전 재결성해서 활동중입니다. 작년에 새 앨범이 나왔죠.
머틀리 크루(Motley Crue) 역시 건재하고 있죠.
